Acoustic Analysis of Preschool Children's Speech

چکیده
In this paper, changes in acoustic characteristic of young children speech are investigated as a function of age. We examined fundamental frequency, formant frequencies and vowel durations of ten monophtongal vowels from American-English speaking children, age groups 3 to 6. In this study, we also examined the vowel pronunciation variability of young-aged children. The results show that preschool children speech exhibits high fundamental and formant frequencies and greater variations between subjects for all age groups. Individual vowel durations averaged across all subjects in preschooler follows similar pattern for all age groups. Our statistical analysis shows that age effect is significant on pronunciation variability. Finally, an information-theoretic analysis of developmental changes in the speech signal is presented. The findings based on mutual information between the vowel category and the spectral features correspond well with results of automatic vowel recognition.

The development of distinct speaking styles in preschool children.
PURPOSE To examine when and how socially conditioned distinct speaking styles emerge in typically developing preschool children's speech. METHOD Thirty preschool children, ages 3, 4, and 5 years old, produced target monosyllabic words with monophthongal vowels in different social-functional contexts designed to elicit clear and casual speaking styles. Thirty adult listeners were used to asses...

This study examined (a) developmental stability and change in children's private speech during the preschool years, (b) across-task consistency in children's self-speech, and (c) across-setting relations between children's private speech in the laboratory and their behaviour at home and in the preschool classroom. A group of 32 normally developing three- and four-year-old children was observed ...
متن کاملA comparison of recordings of sentences and spontaneous speech: perceptual and acoustic measures in preschool children's voices.
A well-controlled recording in a studio is fundamental in most voice rehabilitation. However, this laboratory like recording method has been questioned because voice use in a natural environment may be quite different. In children's natural environment, high background noise levels are common and are an important factor contributing to voice problems. The primary noise source in day-care center...
